I determined to go to Boston - to give myself an ice cream soda. I didn't hope to gain anything by it except the calmer perspective. Miss S & I went up from luncheon & had a talk in the drawing room. I tried again to explain. She said man had three faculties, mutual, moral, physical. That these were analogous in some respects but were distinct. She also said that she had read the books that she criticised. She said the Bishop hoped to move in & that he would urge iny(?) social effect in the city "You are the only one of us who has made a social place for herself".
I reached Boston at midnight, doubtful but still insistent for a bit of pleasure. A man spoke to me & I did not recognize the gentleman, being timid.

An Hatian cabby drove me as near as he could on account of the slippery street. There was a light! It served to mean a solution [illegible] all my troubles. Alicia was at the door.
We talked till three or more. She thought me right. She thought I could say nothing to the Bishop, departure being criticism enough. Sunday we went to Cambridge. Mrs Wright listened with eagerness. I didnt tell her many details, illustrations of meanness & inefficiency. I showed her the letters & she giggled. She wanted me to ask Mr. Wright. He came & I showed him the letters. He asked questions. I suggested nothing. At the end he said two things were clear. I must not return with any stipulations. That her motives were either [illegible] personal jealousy & religion. B. But suppose the instructions removed?
M. T. My general efficiency has been hampered.
B. Hampered by what?
M.T. By the personality of the hamperer.
B. Suppose that could be reformed?
M.T. I doubt whether any good work can be done in cooperation with connection with that personality.
caller came + stayed long connecting(?) Mr. Wright privately. He returned for leaving(?) him at the door to say to me emphatically "I say, go!" When I went home he came to help me on with my things. "Im glad you have a nice coat to keep you warm" he said affectionately. I said that I
