had been credited with less than the
face of the bills, the proprietors having
paid the full amount for which the
bills were rendered.

Hearing on accounts of Supt continued.

To this charge the superintendent
replied that as the books were kept entire-
ly by Mr Safford, the clerk, he did
not know how the errors occurred, if
there were such errors; but that he held
himself in readiness to respond to any such
deficiencies as should be proved.

The Committee also showed that
the Superintendent had been in the practice
of receiving the money on bills due
to the Corporation for upwards of
one hundred dollars (in contravention
of the by law which requires all such bills
to be paid to the Treasurer,) and crediting
the same on the books of the Corporation,
in two or more sums of less than one
hundred dollars each, at different
dates, for the sake of evading the by-law,
when the bills had been paid in one sum.

This charge was admitted by the
Superintendent
, but alleged to be done
by him as a matter of convenience,
giving him no more trouble than to
obtain the approval of the person
with whom the contract had been
made. _
