duties, gave him time to cultivate a refined taste
and to deserve the literary honors which from time
to time were bestowed upon him.
He has died
as it were prematurely, in the prime of an efficient
and intellectual life, when he was looking forward,
apparently not without reason, to the future enjoyment
of his ample library, his cultivated friends, his self-
made fortune and the social responsibilities which
he ever freely met and faithfully fulfilled.
The Trustees tender to his afflicted family the
assurance of their deepest sympathy in this their
great and mutual loss.
