The Statue of the late Dr. Nathaniel
Bowditch, now standing in Mount Auburn Cemetery,
is in a very unsatisfactory condition owing to cracks
having appeared in the bronze and to the metal
scaling off. A report made by Mr. T. H. Bartlett,
a competent expert, advises that there is no
use in trying to repair the statue, and that a
new one should be cast.

The children of Dr. Bowditch will
very gladly bear the expense of casting a new
statue, and of placing it in Mt. Auburn; and
would like permission to remove the present statue
from its pedestal for the purpose of sending it
to Europe and having a new cast made from
it as a model, which will be done as quickly
as possible.

Will you be kind enough to
obtain permissions from the Trustees for the re-
moval of the Statue for the above purpose?

Very respectfully yours,
