send the paper referred to
yourself. If you have received
it, (you will no doubt, if you have not)
I desire to say, that I should not
have ventured to submit the views
there expressed, but for the full known fact
that Mr Bond's large private bu-
siness renders the office one of no
importance to him - indeed it would
be a hindrance, if he must keep one
in attendance all the time. I believe it
would be better to pay one person well,
and let the Corporation have the benefit of
his services, than give one third pay to
two persons, and be entitled to only a
fraction of their time.

I have no practice to conflict with the
discharge of the duties of both offices, and
I feel that I can shortly make the
duties of Treasurer, as well as I may
already have become acquainted with those of
Secretary.

I ought to earn $1500 per annum,
and I see no reason why I should
so long have been inattentive to the
suggestions of prudence. But the fact is
this: I dislike change, and have always
borne the reputation, where I have a taste
for any duty, of working without ^sufficient pay. I
think I should probably continue to do
so, did not the necessities of the times
and my advancing steps in life admonish
me. It is, however a somewhat serious
matter for one to abandon (or nearly so)
the profession in which he has embarked,
for an office, however lucrative, which
in the nature of things lasts but a
few years. And I ought not to do this,
without feeling that I shall not, in the
end, regret it. I do not think I should
regret it if I can ^aid in accomplishing for our
Cemetery what I have in view- the estab-
lishment of it, in general and detail, upon
a moneyed basis that will make it in
future generations still the delightful
spot of resort for the citizen and stranger.

Believing you will be governed by
your convictions of what is most for the interest
of the Corporation you represent.

I am very resp.y
your obt servt

A. J. Coolidge
