of the lot before 1879. I cannot compare its
appearance in past years with the present.
The lot was certainly not in good order when
it came under the care of the Corporation in
1879 and you gave then special direction as
to certain repairs which were wanted on the
lot, which were made.

As to the matter of the shade, my experience
has always been that it made a great deal
of difference, and that the effects of such
shade and the roots of the trees were particularly
seen in very dry or very wet seasons.
