Dear Sir
Your favor of the
4th inst is received & will have careful
attention.
The lot has not suffered from
neglect although I know the ivies
are not as you would like to see them.
I personaly examined the lot with
the gardener several weeks ago and
found several of the Japanese ivies
dead (these were replaced at the
earliest date the season would permit)
and the ends of the ivies which run
on the trellis were found to be
dead (winter killed) in the roots.
The [?] very vigorous
much larger than any new plants
which could be put in.
The gardener believed that by trimming
the ivy & letting it start again from
the roots the trellis would be more
quickly covered than with new
plants.
It has not been warm enough
to put out madeira vines until
now & they would not have borne
the cold nights had they been
put out. During the last two weeks
we have lost many plants which
are much more hardy than the vine
and no [lesson?] has been so [backed?]
as the present during my connection
here.
Yrs very truly
