appeared to be in need of it - I had finished
the spoons and was just commencing an attack
upon the castor-stands when Sarah came for
me - We went first to Miss Chamberlain's school,
which is of the same grade as mine, and there
I saw what I have never seen in my school-room
rows of children sitting still with but very little
whispering, and no moving of the hands or feet,
and classes standing in a straight line without
turning and twisting - I came home and droped
a few tears not that her school was so good but
that mine is so bad – I should never dare to
show my face again if this attempt at school-
keeping should prove to be a failure -
I engaged to go this afternoon to see Mr Howard,
but when I came to think that he would
undoubtedly ask me about my school, and what
kind of a story should I have to tell him
I felt as if I could not go, and sent Sarah
a note excusing myself - Have been making
some gooseberry tarts, and must go now and
take some slips off of the Oleander as mother
tole me to.
Tuesday, Sept. 14.
School again today and I am somewhat encouraged
for though my scholars are greatly in want of
training it is not so very bad a school after all
