a telegraphic^message from her husband in California
Boston - I rushed in expecting in spite of
her usual calmness to see her a little excited -
but no there she sat by the kitchen fire,
warming her feet as calmly as if the husband
she had'nt seen for three years was still in
California, or rather had never been away -

They say it is better to be able to take eveyr
thing with perfect composure - but for my part
I had rather see any one under some circumstances
act not quite so sensibly - The result of this
telegram was that the next morning at
two oclock Mrs Porter set out for Boston, at
six Miss Turner started for Machias - They
have been with us now over six months, and
we felt badly at parting with them - for both
of them particularly Miss Turner I have much
affection - Miss Turner is every thing that
is kind, good and amiable, but from seeing
her I should say deliver me from being an
old maid - She has plenty of money to go
where and do what she likes, but no home
no one to particularly care for her, and notwithstanding
all her friends, her brothers and sisters, her money
and everything else she seems to be alone in
the world - Their leaving caused quite a
