Dear Professor Rölvaag:
Thank you very much for your letter of September 30, which I have read with the greatest interest. It is clear to me that I did not have a correct understanding of how the World's Fair matter had originated, and in the light of what you say I feel that I was much too incisive in what I wrote to you the other day.
Sincerely yours
Theodore C. Blegen

Professor O. E. Rölvaag St. Olaf College Northfield, Minnesota
My dear Professor Rölvaag:
Thank you very much for sending me a copy of your report. May I suggest two slight changes? Both occur in the paragraph on the first page relating to editorial help. In the second line of that paragraph I would suggest that you use the words "an assistant editor" instead of merely "an assistant." And in the fourth line of the paragraph, instead of "clerical help in the editorial office," I would suggest that you write "the services of a research assistant."
Sometime when you are less busy than you are now, I wonder if you would be kind enough to let me have a copy of the statement that you made about my book in your report.
I like your stationery very much better than the old. I shall study the problem a little, and in a few days I hope to send you a form to use for the editorial board.
I am waiting with much interest for the appearance of your book -- and I am sure that very many other people are, also. My best wishes for its success.
Sincerely yours
Theodore C. Blegen

Dear Blegen:
After our return from Madison I sent the Thor Anderson letter to Osland who is ex officio a member of the Board of Finance. He returns it declaring that we can't do anything for Thor Anderson.
I am going to have a talk with Mr. Osland one of these days. Sometimes he gets a bit difficult to work with. This Thor Anderson matter was referred to the Board of Finance and Mr. Osland simply refuses to have it considered!
But getting peeved doesn't get us any aid for Mr. Anderson. Now I wonder if you could not approach Mr. Moe, the secretary of the Gugenheim Foundation? It's a pity that Anderson should get stuck now. We need the work done that he is trying to do. It would be a wonderful thing for us all.
I hope you will at least try!
Sincerely yours
O. E. Rölvaag

Dear Mr. Rolvaag:--
I shall be glad to write to Mr. Moe. Though I think it doubtful that the Guggenheim Foundation would be able to do anything for Mr. Anderson, I think it not unlikely that Mr. Moe would be able to suggest some foundation or organization that might subsidize the work. It seems to me that Mr. Anderson is doing a tremendously important piece of work.
Sincerely yours

Professor O. E. Rölvaag St. Olaf College Northfield, Minnesota
Dear Professor Rölvaag:
I have just received the reply from Mr. Henry Allen Moe of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to my inquiry concerning the possibility of a fellowship for Mr. Thor Anderson.
Mr. Moe mentions only one institution and that is the Huntington Library at San Marino, California. The director of research at that library is Dr. Max Farrand. It appears that the Huntington Library gives grants to further research in American history, but I am afraid that the research in question would have to be done at the Huntington Library itself. I suppose that I might write to Dr. Farrand and sound him out. Meanwhile I wanted to let you know that I had written to Henry Allen Moe and that I have heard from him in reply.
Sincerely yours
Theodore C. Blegen
