About

Collection of Returns of British Army Officers covering 1870s-1907. They give various information, we are not capturing all the information.

All dates to be written in full such as: 25 December 1900

The records will vary, depending on date and regiment. Not all service records contain all the fields.

  • The records may start with an index or list by name or regiment: mark these accordingly in the first field
  • The folio number is in the top right hand corner, this is generally the stamped number. If unsure note all numbers, separated by a ;
  • We do not need the rank in the name fields, but we do need title, such as Lord, Earl, Sir or The Honourable
  • Enter the Regiment or Division as recorded at the top of the page. If no regiment is recorded, then record as Not Given
  • We only need dates for first and last noted ranks. Capture if With Purchase, Full Pay or Half Pay
  • Reserve /retired / died: Note if the record gives a date and which one
  • Some records may include campaigns fought, such as Zulu or Egyptian. Note the campaigns, not specific battles
  • Medals awarded: Note any medals and clasps, such as Egyptian Medal, or Clasps.
  • Note the languages spoken, if any
  • Record date and place of birth. In some cases the date given is the date or age on attestation to the ranks (non officer); record this date or age in the separate attestation field; such as: 21 April 1891, 18 years and 2 months
  • Record marriage and children's details with dates, if any. If none are shown, record the marriage as 'Not Given'

The information may be over two pages, with some of the information on the second page. There is no need to duplicate from the first page

If anything is unclear, mark the page for review, and leave comment on what is unclear

Any extra remarks or comments from the service include in the Notes field

If you are unsure of anything or wish to ask a question or leave a comment add to the Notes and Questions at the foot of the page. Mark the page as For Review and we will respond in due course.
