Transcription Conventions

  • Spelling: Use original spelling if possible.
  • Capitalization: Retain original capitalization.
  • Only complete fields where there is something to enter. Where details are not given, leave the entry as blank. So if no name given leave the field blank.
  • If there is more than one name for a crime, enter name each as a separate entry.
  • Punctuation: Use original punctuation when possible.
  • A full transcription is not required, just a summary with the following details
  • Date: The date at the top of the page. Do not enter dates as 01 or abbreviated, such as Jan or Dec. Years in full. Enter in the format 5 January 1828.
  • Page: L/R: Enter from the drop down options, left or right hand page. If page is blank, leave fields blank.
  • Folio: The number in the top right hand corner of the page.
  • Office: examples - Bow Street, Marylebone, Marlborough
  • Name of accused: Name of the person accused of a crime
  • Crime: Where a crime is reported but no suspect is named
  • Charge: the crime the defendant was accused of. A summary is adequate for this project
  • Place: Where the crime took place
  • Name of Victim (Plaintiff): the name of the victim of the crime
  • Verdict: the outcome of the report. Discharged, sentenced, committed, and where to
  • Information to: Where a crime is reported, and no suspect is known, information should be sent to, or reward offered
  • Use Mc when the name starts M' ie McIntyre for M'Intyre. We are aware that the name may be MacIntyre but we cannot confirm which.
  • Line Breaks: Hit Enterto add an extra row. Two returns indicate a new paragraph, whether indicated by a blank line or by indentation in the original.
