Transcription Conventions

• To transcribe: Select a page from only Pages That Need Transcription. Please do not work on pages that show Completed or Review.
• Spelling: Use original spelling as written.
• Capitalization: Retain original capitalization.
• Punctuation: Use original punctuation as written.
• Line Breaks: Hit Enter once after each line ends. Use two Returns or Enters to indicate a new paragraph, whether indicated by a blank line or by indentation in the original.

Chart/cell titles:

• H: Hour–The day begins at noon and continues until noon the following day.
• K: Knots–1 knot = 1.15078 mph
• F: “F” may indicate ‘fathoms’ (depth) when in port.
• hk: hk column is either empty or a 1, indicating that a half-knot should be added to the headway (speed) stated in the K column
