Monday December 29th1873
Comes in with moderate breezes from
W.N.W. fair weather steering E.S.E all
drawing sail set. at Sunset took in
all sail but double reefed Main top
Sail and M. Spencer, and hauled
by the wind to the NE by N. wind NW by
N. Middle part wind and weather
much the same. Latter part strong
breezes from N.N.W dark misty weather
steering SE. under double reefs. and
Foresail. Sent down T.T.G yard. at
10 PM. Charles Smith was taking very
sick with numness of limbs and pains
in chest and sides. bathed him
with rum and gave him warming
drink. he appeared to get much better
and seemed comfortable until
2 AM when a change took place
and he died suddenly. he was ailing
lately, but nothing that appeared to
himself or others to be very serious
was on deck for a short time during
the day at 9 AM commited his
body to the deep
