(LETTER TO SHERIFFS AND POLICE CHIEFS)
September _____, 1954
Dear Siri
It having been decided that the State of South Carolina should participate in the further argument of the school segregation cases in the United States Supreme Court, I am endeavoring to obtain information from those who are best acquinted with the possible difficulties to be encountered in attampting to abolish segregation in the North Carolina schools.

I enclose a queationaire which I am sendin to sheriffs and police chiefs througout the State. Your own oapdid opinion on each of the matters covered will be of great assistance to me in presenting North Caroline´s case to the United States Supreme Court.

It is exceedingly important that nothing be done to intensify the deep concern of the people in all of our comunities over the possibility of violent conflict between white and Negro people. For that reason I request that you do not discuss this questionnsire with anyone else and do not refer to its having been sent to you, but that you give me your own opinion with reference to those questions.
Yours very truly,

MAFORZ McMULLAN
Attorney General
