An Act for Destroying Squirels, Crows and Black Birds in
that part of New Hanover County called New Topsail Sound
Whereas by the great Increase of Squirels, Crows and Black Birds much Damage is
Yearly done to the growing Corn and Mast in that Part of New Hanover County
called New Topsail Sound For Remedy Whereof Be it Enacted by the
Governor Council and Assembly and by the authority of the same, That every Mast[torn]
or Mistress of any Family, or Overseer of a Plantation Where there is no Master
or Mistress, Inhabiting in that part of New Hanover County along the sounds from Lees
Creek to Beaseley's Creek including all the Inhabitants as far back as the south
East side of Harrisons Creek and Island Creek thence by a direct Line to the
head of Lees Creek shall kill or Caus to be killed within the said Limit
in every Year five Squirrels three Crows and ten Black Birds for each and
every Taxable in his or her Family and for Neglect or failure shall pay
four pence for every Squirel and Crow and two Pence for every Black
Bird he or she shall so fail to kill.
And Be it further Enacted That every Master Mistress or Overseer
Where there is no Master or Mistress/within the said district Shall
annually within Twenty days after the first day of January go before a
Justice of the Peace within the said County, with a List of the
Squirels Crows and Black Birds, which he or she hath killed or hath
caused to be killed and shall make Oath that the Squirrels Crows and Black Birds
Mentioned in the said List were killed within the Limits aforesaid and shall Obtain a
Certificate
