Tuesday

Dear Mother,

You can know that all is quiet on the nursery front or I would not be down at the typewriter.. we want to be SURE to get this when you land so are sending it earlier than you said.

We know that you are mostly interested in [[Michael]] so I will talk of him first. He is growing fatter every day.. his face is, especially. He has been a good boy and Saturday night let us sleep again right through. Since, he has decided to be like other children and has gotten us up for the past two nights at the appropriate times! After all, we want him normal, don't we?

[[Gordon Sears]] was just in to see him.. then it was feeding time, so like everything else, this job was interrupted. We are getting along fine though, and are managing to eat in peace even though we are not always eating at the same time each day.. what does it matter with [[David]] a free agent and not tied down to any office hours? David started his writing schedule yesterday morning and is hard at it this morning.. I manage to get the few house chores done and in order NOT TO OVERDO (This for your benefit and peace of mind!) I set myself on or two other small jobs a day, and don't do any others. For instance, last evening after an early supper and while Michael was still sleeping, I answered Tourist Bureau inquiries for cottages. This morning I am sterilizing bottles and nipples and plan to put a load through the washer... I am taking plent of rest and sleeps and feel good. With regard to the washing, (and in answer to your little note) I thought I had told you that I ask Dr. Peters specifically about hanging out clothes and he said it was alright.. that the more stretching and exercising I did the better. So rest easily on that score.

I have gotten off Michael I see but he is as sweet as ever and what more can I say?

Rusty and Ricki had a fine time together..they wandered all over the house and showed signs of interest when Michael cried.. Ricki was more aloof, of course, than Rusty. He would prick up his ears at the firsst cry and then be "EVER THE UNINTERESTED ONE"..whereas Rusty would really try to see what was going on. One day Michael was in the living room in the little crib and started to cry..I was fussing with him in the crib and Rusy was straining his neck to ee into the crib, to no avail...next thing I knew he was up the stairs and standing on the balcony looing over and getting a first rate bird's eye view! Pretty cute, eh? And he had a most worried expression on his face. Of course we don't let them stay together in the same room alone, and when we are both out of the house we close a strategic door, but otherwise, Rusty wanders around and really doesn't pay too much attention to Michael...He sleeps in the living room and porch of course.

Michael has been using his big crib during the daytime it is very cool for him.. It is a lovely crib and thanks again so much. We found out, by the way, that the ship sailed from Hoboken..hope you got Michael's wire alright..we phone it in and they called back to say the ship went from New Jersey instead of New York..we haven't heard further so guess you

got it alright.

You certainly timed your trip right as I did Michael.. you were with us when we needed you the most and having the meals cooked and all the other little things done last week was wondering! This week we are really normal. The cooked vegetables came in handy and were a boon for the first two nights. Rosemary and Donny came in to say goodbye Sunday and brought a home-baked banana cream pie..rich as sin and gooey as all get out.. That was grand for our desserts. I gave Rosemary what clean maternity clothes I had and am going to send her the others after they are washed and cleaned.. I am so glad that someone can use them right away while they are in good shape.

I can just imagine you now sprawled out on a deck chair and enjoying a leisurely trip (sure hope the pills work).. as I said Saturday night, dong go on any diet.. just enjoy all he second helpings and desserts you want for you'll have the rest of the summer to take it off. Get all you can out of this trip and enjoy it to the full.

We were surprised to see Dad back Sunday night..he came down for Ricki of course... offered him a bed in the shop but he wanted go home...

Michael slept on the porch all yesterday morning by the way... as I think of these little things, I put them in..know you want to hear ALL.

Will leave some space for David now...this we hope will be at Le Havre to greet you..Mother, again, we can't thank you enough for all your help...between you and Marie I got off to a grand start...this week I feel like a new person and don't get in a tizzy when Michael cries or wants to eat earlier than I think he should.. or if I have to keep dinner late to look after him. Also, the house doesn't bother me..if I get it swept out fine, and if not, alo fine...Sooner or later it'll be set to rights...I am really taking life easily and find myself swinging in the hammock at the oddest hours of the day (unlike last year or the previous years)...as though I hadn't a care in the world..and I hope YOU haven't...Tell Mally hello and good trip to you all..We'll look forward to a letter from you soon..

Lots of love from Michael and me, Phyl

Dear Mother,

Phyl has covered the ground pretty well. I've been doing my research mornings, and working on the cottages (little finish-up jobs) and painting signs and other odd jobs around here in the afternoon. Actually, this is the most restful summer we've had since we were married, and everything working out so well in all respects. We see Dad regularly, and will start having him down for snacks soon. be sure to write regularly...always BY AIR MAIL.

Lots of love, David

July 4, 1954

Dear Mother,

I am afraid that we missed the June 30th Munich deadline..will get this written ahead of time and be able to mail it as soon as we hear of another address. We enjoyed your letter to us and are so glad you are having a wonderful time in spite of aching legs! What a lot you'll have to tell us when you get back...

Well, we are fine and getting along well in spite of the crowds of people who seek our door..the lack of the Craft Shop has barely lessened the number of people who call..as we always say, we are delighted to see each of them but sometimes it gets rough when they all come at once! One evening we had 11 in the living room at the same time! When I have to to like blazes between Michael's feedings and his "social hours" (when he doesn't want to sleep but just sit up and be with people!) I really get behind when we have a lot of company. But that is the summer for you!

We took him to the doctor last Tuesday for his 4 weeks check (actually one day less) and found he had gained almost 2 lbs. (1 lb. 14 oz.) so guess I am producing the right amount and quality of food for the little guy. He started on solid food the next day (that is, cereal and strained fruit) and also his vitamin drops. The doctor said he was in fine shape (especially his lungs after they took a blood sample!) He was an angel in the car and seems to love to ride...He also loves his food..probably will develop an appetite like his father..he eats food twice a day and consequently has cut down a little on his feeding times..He has been given three spoons now..Ditt sent him a tiny sterling silver spoon which he is now using (strictly for the first feeding days..it is adorable and just right for his little mouth)...He gets along well with the food although there is much scooping on my part, off chin and chest..but he manages to get practically all of it down...He still hasn't gone straight through the night yet (after those first 3 nights..an accident I am sure!) but we are hoping..he really is growing round and has completely changed in looks..he has had so many people come to see him and so many lovely presents sent to him.. about the spoons, he has a sterling silver initialed spoon with a curved handle which will be used when he starts to feed himself and then the little spoon and fork set that Ree Perry gave him which is for when he is some older...He has done well by eating utensils!

Dad took us to the Croatan last Thursday night and Lael came down to baby sit..she took over when he was crying and got him quieted down..she seems to do a good job with him loves him dearly. We enjoyed a good steak (moved up ;from Sat. night because lkof the 4th holiday) and came back to receive a houseful lof company! 9 in all, not counting Dad and Lael who beat a hasty retreat when the room got filled0..this was a different crowd from the one mentioned above!

The Brambles are all down this weekend so we are going to go over to Colington tomorrow (Monday) with Michael..we haven't been for a long time..Also the Stuarts are all down.. The Washburns were in yesterday and the Maesterlings have been in a couple of times; Eleanor, Terry and Germaine; the Gards (Annie Laurie is crazy about Michael and drops in now and then to see him); all the Smiths from the Va, Dare Hardware and several

-2Kitty Hawk people and also Manteo people .. he is very popular .. we don't for one moment think it we they come to see, of course! Dad seems to be getting along fine .. very busy which is good for him .. he has been to eat with us a couple of evenings and goesregularily to Charlotte's and I suppose he has told you about his social engagements .. he even had a cocktail party since you left .. but I know he misses you as does Ricki .. However the time is flying and it won't be long before you'll be back .. I can't seem to get caught up, of course .. I am feeling wonderful and don't get so tired at nights now .. at first was ready to flop when night came .. Michael doesn't worry me anymore .. in fact am achieving a good degree of nonchalance .. guess those first days are the hardest on the nervous system .. I don't know how we could have managed without the washing machine ... it is blessing in disguise .. my laundrey is no problem at all .. do about 3 or 4 loads a week .. sometimes 2 a day and so am only washingt at most 3 days a week .. and everything dries so quickly coming out of that spinner that I haven't met any impasses on diaper shortages .. really have plenty anyway .. It will continue to be a wonderful present and we are so grateful ... The crib is wonderful too .. doesn't look quite so small in it anymore and we get along fine with him in the other room .. have great plans for fixing up his room and will get to them shortly .. have resolved to move everything out that isn(t his .. already he hasplenty of stuff to fill it .. how I ever thought we were gaining a guest room is more than I can fathom! We have two cottages rented this week .. the little one next door for the first time .. We have quite a few reservations too and are quite pleased with the results so far .. Unfortunately we rented these two yesterday to people who came down, I expect, looking for motels and being the 4th couldn't find them or maybe expected linens to be furnished, and didn't have them .. so I have 14 sheets and 7 pillow cases and towels to match, to be laundered next week .. wouldn't happen again, I don't expect .. our other reservations except for one week are all without linens .. well, with the washer they won't be a job at all. You never recognize how orderly the household is now .. you certainly got a peak into chaos that first week! But we are straightening out well and I manage to have the house not too dirty anymore .. of course there are many things I don't get done but I don't let that bother me ... Michael comes first, as we all know .. David is good with him in spite of having so much to do .. he is able to help a lot .. He is also getting back to his writing .. tries to stick to it every morning ... We have don very well wholesaling the postcards and maps .. in fact have had to get more postcards to sell .. this time got 20,000 .. The book is going along steadily and by next week I am going to get down to the beanies .. the centers as you know are being made in the village .. we have some out in shops now and also belts .. Annie Laurie is going to make belts for me if I find they go well and need more .. I know that the wholesale business can be developed .. another summer after a winter's work will be a different story .. we are doing it with our left hand this season ... Am enclosing you and Michael .. of all the pictures we took, only
