March 14 -
You had, indeed, written me, and goon that I am, I thought I had answered your letter; but burrowing through this hoora's nest I call my desk, I find both of them.
Welcome to the great grandmas of America. Here are our four generations. Wish Donny had been there instead of me, making it entirely masculine. You can take your place in the feminine succession. This was taken last August. By now of course the little one is walking and talking. Once in a while he says hi to me over the phone (from California!)
One hears so much about the long hot summer, but few mention the long cold winter. This one really is a dilly, but didn't bother us much. We are digging out from yesterday's blizzard - not a bad one, and not bitter cold. I dare hope this is THE March blizzard, and now we can go right on into spring. Already my snow crocuses (much earlier than the real crocuses) were show-ing, and birds really acting up with springlike ardor.
I love being retired and seem to keep busy enough for my taste. I read a great deal and have started practicing piano again. This is pretty discouraging after ten years; it would be pathetic if it weren't so funny, or vice
versa. I haven't made any summer plans yet. Jane Ludman, who lives here with me during the winter, is keen to my little bailiwick down there but cannot leave during the summer because she has summer rental cottages. I told Donny (who makes out the schedule) that J. & I would probably take a couple of weeks in Sptember. I like the fall down there and always hope for a bumper crop of grapes for jelly.
Give my love to Charlotte, Lael
and the little sprite. and lots for you. [M?]ally
