Poe hand-numbered pages from 1 to 43 [followed by some blank pages], and these consist of notes that he made as he toured India from January 1 to February 2, 1911. The back cover, reversed, Poe labeled "A." He makes diary entries dated December 14 to December 31, 1910 that correspond with the typescript journal (2nd version), pages 43 to 48. Those pages include a description of Poe's travel from Hong Kong to Singapore (on the N. G. L. S. S. Kleist); then to Johore, Rangoon, and Penang. Poe's particularly notable entries include his description of Christmas spent at the E. & O. [Eastern and Oriental] Hotel, Penang, looking over a summer sea. Poe's last entries in this segment to December 31, 1910, refer to the Strand Hotel (Rangoon), elephants, the Southern Cross, and his articles on Singapore, Penang, and Rangoon.
