OSTEOPATHS' BILL IS OPPOSED BY DOCTORS Dr. H. B. Weaver, of Asheville, Fighting Law Licensing Them to Practice Surgery. Dr. H. B. Weaver, of Asheville, who is in Raleigh representing the Buncombe County Medical society in the fight against a bill now pending in the state legislature which would permit osteopaths to practice "minor" surgery, will not return today as was expected, owing to postponement of consideration of the measure by the senate committee on propositions and grievances. When the bill, on motion of State Senator Marcus Erwin, of Buncombe county, was recalled from the senate and placed in the hands of the committee after passing the lower house and passing two readings in the senate, it was decided that the committeemen had "heard enough for the day" and would reconsider the bill this morning. The medical society takes the position that "there is no distinction between major surgery and minor surgery," and that "all operations may prove to be dangerous. Asheville physicians stated that they saw little difference between granting surgery liceses to the 35 osteopaths in North CArolina" and "lowering the standard of the profession" at a time when "there is a desire on the part of practitioners to raise it in the interest of saving human life." This bill would permit osteopaths to practice their profession in hosptials, making it compulsory for the hospitals to permit their practice of minor surgery, it was stated.

[letterhead A three story brick building - Text CAPITOL] State of North Carolina HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Raleigh, 192

Dear Ellen The explanation in the other letter is not right. The Osteopath Bill originated in the House and was killed in the house. The medical bill was introduced in the Senate and House both at the same tine, It was amended in the House leaving the Osteopaths just where they are and sent over to the Senate. These hearing were only Committee hearing and were not debated before the House. The piece in the Pages is [illegible] The Medical Bill will go on with the Amendment while the Osteopathy bill was killed

Dear Ellen I am inclosing a clipping I want you to correct The Osteopath Bill was introduced in the Senate and killed there. I want you to state that it never reached the House. The Bill that was in the House was the Medical Bill, that was introduced by Representative Dr Monroe, which was to restrict the Osteopaths and limit their power. This is the one before the House and was amended to leave them where they are and have been for 14 years. Pleas correct this, but don't use my name. Say a Representative wished this correcion made.
