RECORD OF FIRING>
A daily record kept by the commander at each emplacement and turned over to
the Commander who succeeds him.

SEARCHING FIRE.
That in which the fire of the gun is distributed in direction of depth.

SECTOR.
A portion of the front assigned to a Machine Gun Unit to observe and cover
with fire.

SINGLE LINE.
A line formation of a Machine Gun Unit with all the carriages abreast of
each other.

TRAJECTORY.
The path of a bullet in its flight.

TRAJECTORY CHART. (GRAPH)
A chart drawn to a scale showing the trajectories of bullets at the different
ranges. Generally engraved on transparent paper for super positions on profiles
of the ground.

SIGNALS.
With the following esceptions and additions, signals used by the Machine
Gun Organizations will be those prescribed in the Infantry Drill Regulations.

ACTION.
Strike with the clenched fist in direction indicated (This signal is used when
the gun crews are ina position of readiness, or are resting during pauses in
an engagement, etc. At the signal crews take positions at the guns)

OUT OF ACTION.
Strike the open plam[?palm] of one hand several times with the clenched fist of
the other hand. (Signal indicates gun out of action or not ready to fire.)

READY TO FIRE.
Hand up.

PREPARE TO FIRE.
Hand up.

COMMENCE FIRING.A
Drop the hand quickly to the side from the position PREPARE TO FIRE if the
MACHINE GUN OFFICER does not wish to fire he will use signal for "suspend firing"
when hand will be dropped.

RANGE OR CHANGE ELEVATION.
To announce range, extend arm towards chief of platoon for whose gun the
range is intended, fist closed, By keeping the fist colsed [?closed] battle sight is indicated.
From battle sight or 500 yards, strike upwards once for each 100 yards increase
to 900 yards inclusive. For 1000 yards extend the arm twice, etc. To add 50 yards
describe a short horizontal line with fore finger.

The followong hand and arm signals will be used in connection with mil
measurements for fire observers and control.

TO RAISE THE MUZZLE FROM ONE TO FOUR MILS.
Extend the clenched fist as in battle sight, for five milsand strike up-
wards once for each additional mil.

DEPRESS THE MUZZLE IN MILS
Motion and strike downwards as indicated above.
One turn of elevation wheel is equivalent to ten mils.

To swing the cone of fire by a change of deflection as as measured in mils.
TO THE RIGHT.
Wave open hand to the right and then strike with clenched fist as indicated
above the raise muzzle.
