My N.C. friend has moved on, and I am in the
midst of making new ones. They too will follow suit, and
I will begin the process over again. Each time ^(it) leaves its
impression, and you find that that feeling of desertion that
seems to make the silence of inanimate things echo the voices
and noises of [crossed out word (its)] human companionship - the reason of their very
existence, like the empty class room in the late afternoon -
is the same in any part of the world. You stand and think
and then you say "it is time for me to go home too"

I wish I could, dearest, and that this anniversary of ours
could be spent together. Anywhere, even, well, even on
the way to Kalamazoo!

I love you dearest,
John Burke
