European Notes

April 28th 1858.

Took passage on board the Cunard Steamer, "Africa", for Liverpool-Lillie accompanying us. Matilda and Lillie occupied the Captain's room [illegible] while [Mr B?] had [illegible] upper berth - 70 in the same room, was taken by a gentleman (Hosia) from Cincinnati, daughter and friend

The Captain's name is Shannon - and the steamer left the dock at 5 o'clock A.M. full of passengers.

The voyage was a fair average of sea traveling - head wind - rain - sun - much bumbling about and more seasickeness. Nothing besides, worthy of note transpired until cape clear was discovered -

On Saturday P.M. May 8th at 5 oclock while at dinner; and on Sunday the 9th at 10 oclock the [the sun find?] - [illegible] our arrival at Liverpool. Time from sun to sun. 5 hours 11 days. The following is a list of passengers.

At about 1 oclock (night) landed, and went to the Hotel Adelphi - where we remained until Tuesday morning, when we left for London [illegible] past [10?] oclock train and at 5 reached Eastern [shore?]

station - where we took a cab and went in search of apartments. With exception of the one when we finally discovered [in margin: "Golden Cross] the hotels were all full - lodging houses - ditto - indeed this town was perhaps never more crowded - It being "the season" and the year approach of the Queen's Birthday -

Wednesday 12th. Called at the [Bar?] of the Rothschilds and presented my draft for acceptance for £451 10/10 $2200. - at 3 days light, from [illegible] Belmont [illegible]. I was told that it could not be cashed until six days after [sight or light?]; which reminded me the Jewish characteristics of the old cloths race from which there [Bawlers?] spring -- went to Peabody's and saw Morgan - [J.P Lewis?] at Paris and told him to send to Rothchild, and get the draft and [illegible]

Thursday 13th - Rain - went out in search of rooms, but not being successful, we resolved to [illegible] Sunday for Paris - when just at this time we hear there are plenty of accomodations. Evenin, went to the [illegible] -

dirt old Haymarket theater - school for scandal - Pluto and Proserpine -

Should have stated first in order that we went to St. Paul's - the Tunnel - the Tower - and the Crystal Palace -

Friday - 14 - Loafed about, while the ladies went to see Westminster Abby

Saturday 15 - [Susan's?] Birthday - and opening of the new opera house built upon ruins of the Covent Garden theatre - [illegible] said [illegible] largest theatre in the world - stall seats for tonight only £3. each!!!

Sunday - 16th - Went out to Hampton Court - and dined. -

Monday 17 - Left London for [Folkstone?]; and remained there until -

Tuesday - 18th - When we crossed the channel and went directly up to Paris. Took a carriage and drove to a large number of Hotels, but found

them all full - so went to Hotel [Louvre?], where we procured bedrooms on the 3rd floor! -

Wednesday - 19 - Found our friends the Addoms here -

Friday - 21 - Changed our rooms for a sitting room and 2 bedrooms on the first floor la [?] Cour d'honneur - price - [10 pd.?] parlour - double bed room [illegible] 6 pd - [plus?] 1.50 each person extra -

Monday 24 - changed our rooms again to 3 floor [335 + 33] - until we can get down to 2 stay -
