March [underlined] 17 [underlined] - The English steamer for Cadiz having arrived thes morning, went to the office & secured our passage paying $ 16. for the two. The steamer being 2 days behind her time, we find ourselves unfortunatley obliged to sail in a rain storm & what is worse compelled to go from the short to the steamer about a mile in an open row boat, which would not have been the case had the vessel been more punctual. In taking leave of this town & its hotel we feel no regret, as it is not a place where one should remain longer than a day or tow, or the time necessary to see its forteifications: and as for the hotel it is vile although English. Our stay however has been protracted in hopes of getting an opportunity to go to [illegible], failing in which we have deferred, not abandoned the project.
March [underlined] 18 [underlined] - At 6 oclock in the morning found ourselves in the bay of Cadiz, having sailed int eh steamer Madrid last evening about 7. Our sail out to the steamer [illegible][underlined], all the while & the train pouring down in the torrents upon our devoted heads was [illegible], otherwise we came very comfortably, the vessel being good, living good & a good and funny fellow for a passer, who kept us laughing [illegible] suite late. Our captail has been in Michigan & owned a farm there. The view of Cadiz is beautiful in the extreme & the town the cleanest we have ever seen, our hotel el Trouda [?] Englese overlooking the Alameda & bay is [illegible] [illegible] & our rooms are the best in the house, price $ 3. per day for both [illegible] everything. Took a short talk to view the city, the weather being raining.
