Dear Sir

Will you pardon me for writing your attention to the manner in which Green Turtles are brought to this Market, and confined when sold to dealers in this city, and State.

I visited a large Schooner [by?] [illegible] a Turtle Market yesterday containing a great number of them all piled up, on their backs with their legs secured by cords passed through the flesh.

In this attitude and for [illegible] to they are forced [crossed off] confined without water or food of any sort; it is the opinion of this Society, as well as numerous medical gentlemen that when these animals are prepared and eaten dangerous consequences to health, and even life are likely to ensue.

This Society, as you are aware, can only treat this subject in its cruel [illegible]: but your authority extends to its Sanitary aspects.

I have the honor to be, Sir:
Your obt Sevt.
Henry Bergh, Prst
