Bristol Ferry, R. I. Sept. 2, 1903.

Dear Dr. Leffingwell:- I am returning Mrs. White's letter. I showed it to Mrs. Lovell because I felt sure that Mrs. White would want her to see it.

Mrs. Lovell and I feel that the later we meet the better, because there is so much to be decided beforehand and we need to send out circualrs to the societies and to hear from them. We think it would be far better to meet in November than in October and I certainly hope you will postpone going to Europe until after the meeting as it seems to me a critical time and you would be as much needed here as at any time ever it seems to me

It apparently is not the hands of the executive committee to appoint a meeting place it it is in the hands of Mrs. White only, I understand.

I am not sure that I have spoken to you about the circulars that Mr. Brown intends to send around; perhaps he has already sent them; in which he suggests that each society can have its nine votes by appointing as delegates the names which we have [crossed out] he had on the circular. Do you understand that he intends to send these circulars only [underlined] to those who are in favor of incorporation? If so, I think it would be most unfair and it [crossed out] would cause serious trouble in the Assocation. Do you not agree with me? I fear that affairs are in a very critical state indeed and I hope that we can have the preliminary meeting here between the eighth and fifteenth of September.

As soon as I hear from Mr. Taber and Mr. Brown again I will let you know. I will write to Mrs. White asking her to come to the meeting.

Dr. Leffingwell 2.

I do not understand why it is necessary to have the Convention before Congress meets, please tell me where the connection is?

I wish you would write to Mr. Brown about the matter of not meeting in Philadelphia expect that [crossed out] & I hope you will not urge having the Convention earlier.

Your letter must have been delayed on the way as I have only just received it this morning, and it is dated August 27th. perhaps I have told you in a previous letter that I expect to be away for a few days.

Will you not also write to Mr. Shortall? I think a word from you would have weight. I thought that Mr. Jenkins had resigned from the American Humane Association?

Who do you think should be the next President? Will you be considering the matter?

Yrs in haste S. J. E.
