Biskra 3 JANVIER Clear_Cold_Windy_ 1. DIMANCHE. Circoncision. 1364 This does not seem much like our New Years' at home! But is cold & Windy when one gets out of the sunshine - Roses are blooming out of doors - & we can paint outside well wrapped up & with gloves on! Every evening it gets cold & I have to wear warm dresses - & no [linens?] as yet _ I got settled in the room I am to have for the winter but alas! it has no sun _ and I do miss it dreadfully_ but I thought it better to have the three communicating rooms _ and to be able to use the corridor screened off when we want to paint there _ I wrote home letters all day_

Biskra Clear warmer no wind

Janvier 2. Lundi. S. Basile 2-363

Me got up early and got started with our painting by 9 a.m. I find it very difficult to paint out of doors. And have not done very well with my first attempt. We engaged Mohammad Tahar for a week from 9-12 a.m.. He is a nice clean, little fellow. And understands french and also posing. Took a short walk in the p.m. Enjoyed watching the glorious sunset with the Mts. [mountains] catching the rose color glow.

Biskra Clear

Janvier 3. Mardi. Ste Genevieve 3-362

We got at our painting promptly at nine - and I got down before Eliz. !

Started a new head and hope it is better!

After dejeuner [breakfast] it took a walk by myself-out towards the west and then mts on that side seem very near - with palm trees scattered at their feet!

Then I got some letters at the Bankers- and E joined me on another walk up by the Marche' {market} - M. [monsieur] Frechon saw us just standing watching the Arabs and invited us to take coffee with him at an Arab coffee house! It was very strong and fairly good.

Now I wonder how clean?

Biskra [ALGERIA] Cloudy cold

Janvier 4. Mercredi. S. Rigobert 4-361

It was too cloudy to go on with our work today so I had Mohammad in the doorway of my room and I made a pastel sketch - it was better than my other one but not good! Why can I not do something good? It must have patience as I have not worked for so long!

Took a walk this p.m. inside the Marche' - very picturesque & paintable - but I imagine one could hardly work there. I made a tiny sketch at sunset- I am so anxious to catch something good of that wonderful color. but it only last ten minutes.

Biskra Clear. cold. very windy in the evening

Janvier 5. Jeudi. S. Simeon 5-360

We worked as usual on the terrace- and it is always pretty cold. I have to wear more cloth ing than I do at home in the winter, and gloves to paint in! and withal my hands are again breaking out with chil blains. Too Horrid! Took a long walk with Berthe towards the Desert. It is beautiful every way one goes with the Mts. for a back ground!

After dinner we talked in the drawing room with Mrs Hart and Mrs Barker over the fire.

Eliz. seems to be feeling pretty well
