2nd 3mo It was fully believed that if they had not fell in with those houses, they would undoubtedly have perished for the thermometer was down to 3 degrees in addition to the violence of the wind & the drifting of the snow. In the night following the cold increased the thermometer was down to 1 or 2 degrees.

3rd First day the weather extreme cold, the harbor full of ice & making out very fast.

4th Thermometer at 5 this morning, the streets full of sleighs.

5th 3rd day of the week. Thermometer at 8 degrees. No water to be seen, North from the mouth of the harbor. Never the like for sleighs in the streets.

5th Daniel P. Macy is here on a visit from Philadelphia. He was this way on business & is now detained by the inclemency of the weather.

15th Daniel left her this morning in the Maria Packet. Ariel Coffin for New Bedford, was thence intended for Boston before returned home to Philadelphia.

6th The weather continues cold, the aspect of the earth makes very winterish appearance, every where covered with snow & in many places it is drifted as high as the top of the fences. The business of sleighing is kept with vigilance by a very large number, both night & day. The thermometer ranged about 20 to 29. At night no water to be seen on the North side of the Island & considerable ice on the South side.
The time is not recollected when there has been so cold a spell & to continue so long at this season of the year.
