The meeting was adjourned to 7 th day 23rd instant. Met 23 & appointed sundry officers. The Committee appointed on the subject of Intemperance reported. Which report underwent a long discussion. It was then voted to be returned to the committee who were request to take the subject again into consideration & report at the adjournment of the mtg. some specific measures proper for the town to adopt to suppress the evil of intemperance. The mtg. adjourned to 30th. Most according to adjournment. The committee on the subject of adjournment produced their report which was accepted. In which their [THERE] was the names of about 40 persons proposed as a Committee to use all the advice and preventive measures that may be thought advisable to prevent or lessen the evils of intemperance & to advise the retailers to desist from selling ardent spirits. Strong arguments were used to convince the minds of the people of the necessity of uniting together to save the town from impending ruin by the use of ardent spirits. A number of the retailers have seen the evil effects of handing out spirits have already renounced the trade already & as the number is increasing it is likely many more will follow the example.
