This evening about 8 o'clock, the alarm of Fire was procalimed throughout the town, which proved to be a store of Dry Goods belonging to Andrew Lawrence and [BLANK] Cobb. The Engines were speedily brought and soon quelled the fire without great damage. The fire, the Smoke and the water damaged the Goods, more than can be reinstated for 2000 $ some say 4000 $.
The store was situated on the south Side of Main Street below Geo. [GEORGE] H Riddell's or where Wm [WILLIAM] Rotch [SEIGN?] formerly lived. The circumstances attend this disaster caused the people to be very much alarmed, It being in a part of the town where quantities goods were for sale. It argued and very reasonably, that had it been in the night it appeared probable that it might have destroyed more buildings and a large amount of property. According to the aspect of the subject the Town thought advisable to invite the people together in order to advise what measures was necessary to take. The following names viz [VIDELICET] Geo. [GEORGE] B Upton, Isaac Austin, Geo. [GEORGE] F Worth, David Thane, & Aaron Mitchell, who are requested to be vigilent in the cause & if necessary to call on the Select Men for their assistance.
The Committee carefully searched to find the cause of the fire, but did not succeed, & the subject was suspended.
