Att: Miss Frances Ward Dear Miss Ward:
I noticed in the Legionary, National magazine of the Canadian Legion, of July, 1958, that a book is being written by Cornelius Ryan about D-day, June 6, 1944.
I was with the Canadian Intelligence Corps and went into action with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division on D-day. In case that an interview might be of interest to you, please contact me.
Yours very truly, Max Schwabe

Mr. Max Schwabe E. Miltenberg, Inc. 43 Great Jones Street New York 12, New York
Dear Mr. Schwabe:
Thank you for your letter of July 18th, and for your willingness to help us with Cornelius Ryan's book about D-day. I hope you will forgive me for not having replied more promptly. We have been especially busy here for the past two weeks because Mr. Ryan returns very shortly from work on the book in Europe.
As I wrote to Mr. Hundevad at The Legionary, Mr. Ryan wants very much to tell the story of the Canadian forces wich landed in Normandy on D-day, for we have been directed to their weighty role in the invasion often and respectfully. Therefore I know that he will want to talk with you. I hope very much that you will continue in your willingness to help us and that, as a preliminary to interview by Mr. Ryan, you will complete the enclosed record and return it to me as soon as possible. This is not our lazy road to a story, but the only means we know of making intelligent preparation for interviews. Since our deadline for research is the first of September, I should be grateful too if you would let me know if, when and where you could be interviewed during this month.
This will not be a strategic history, but a story of the mental, physical and emotional impact of D-Day as men truly knew it. I know that Mr. Ryan will be particularly eager to know about an intelligence officer's reaction to the battle for Juno Beach. I particularly look forward to your reply.
Sincerely yours,
Frances Ward Research Department

Dear Miss Ward: Thank you very much for your letter of August 1. I would have liked to answer your questionnaire and also talk to Mr. Ryan.
Unfortunately I have been unable to do so since I had so much important work on my desk which had to be cleared up before tomorrow. It so happens that I have to enter Beth Israel Hospital tomorrow and most regrettably I have no other choice in this matter.
Sincerely yours, Max Schwabe
