- for Cornelius Ryan 2 -
Your name Roy O. Stevens
Did you by any chance keep a diary of what happened to you that day?
No Diary

Were any of your friends killed or wounded either during the landing or
during the day?

Yes Iknew every man in our company there was 220 men.
We were all one big family. The L.C.V.P. I was on one that
was sunk. One boy drowned. We could here him yelling for help
but on one could help him, the channel was too rough.

Do you remember any conversations you had with them before they became
casualties?

Were you wounded?
Yes but not on D-Day

Do you remember what it was like--that is, do you remember whether you
felt any pain or were so surprised that you felt nothing?
No pain just scared

Do you remember seeing or hearing anything that seems funny now, even
though it may not have seemed funny at the time?

The thing that was right funny was this boy had his assault
jacket on and it was loaded down. He saw he was about to
drown if he didn’t get it off. He just took a dive and
when he came up he didn’t have it. Boy was he a happy
man and a smile from ear to ear. His name, Lewis A.Walls.

Do you recall any incident, sad or heroic or simply memorable, which struck
you more than anything else?
The saddest words I ever heard was this Sgt. of the machine
gun section, He said, "I wouldn’t mind doing it if I could
see my little baby".
