No doubt our battalion had made a break-through
after crossing the Douve River. The 82nd A/D had
accomplished its mission. American troops had cut
off the Cherbourg Peninsula. The 2nd Bn. strength
was down to 50% of a full compliment. A book
could be written on the action in Ste Sauveur only.
Our next objective was hill 131, where heavy
artillery fire was coming from enemy positions.
We took up a defensive position and sent our
patrols to contact the enemy. Doeflek and his
patrol struck again killing 6-8 Germans. Things
began to slow down, no enemy contacts were
made for several days. On 3 July 1944 we made
one of those before breakfast attacks on hill
131. A heavy English fog had setteled over the
country side. Enemy heavy artillery pounded
our positions, there infantry continued to withdraw
in great haste. Officers and enlisted men of
the German 191st Arty Regt were captured in
their OP.
The enemy had been beaten. The date was
4 July 1944 and ended our stay in France.
Hoping this information will be of some value.
Yours very truly,
Hubert S Bass
