What was your unit and division? C Company, 505 Prcht. Inf. Regt., 82nd Airborne Div.

Where did you arrive in Normandy, and at what time? 6 June 1944 at approx. 0200 hours

What was your rank on June 5, 1944? PFC

What was your age on June 6, 1944? 21 years of age

Were you married at that time?

What is your wife's name? not applicable

Did you have any children at that time? not applicable

What do you do now? Security Officer, Frankford Arsenal (Ordnance Corps - Dept. of Army)

When did you know that you were going to be part of the invasion? The outfit [inserted] collectively [end inserted] knew of their contemplated role at least two months prior to D Day. In my own individual case - I didn't know until two weeks prior to invasion.

What was the trip like during the crossing of the Channel? Do you remember, for example, any conversations you had or how you passed the time? One of meditation and solitude. I don't remember any specific conversation other than my reference to the flak as sparks from the engines. I do remember that I said the rosary several times as well as tyring to get my "house in order" with God.

Did you by any chance keep a diary of what happened to you that day? No

Were any of your friends killed or wounded either during the landing or during the day? Yes

Do you remember any conversations you had with them before they become casualties? No

Were you wounded? Yes (injured my back as a result of the jump)

Do you remember what it was like--that is, do you remember whether you felt any pain or were you so surprised that you felt nothing? I didn't feel any pain in the beginning, later a dull ache set in)

Do you remember seeing or hearing anything that seems funny now, even though it did not, of course, seem amusing at the time? My own personal experiences while alone during the hours of darkness

Do you recall any incident, sad or heroic, or simply memorable, which struck you more than anything else? Dutch Holland incident The presence of "Slim Jim" up with the troops. The first dead G.I. I saw

Where were you at midnight on June 5, 1944? We were either in the air or still at the air field loading up

Where were you at midnight on June 6, 1944? Under command of General Gavin near the railroad

Do you know of anybody else who landed within those 24 hours (midnight June 5 to midnight June 6) as infantry, glider or airborne troops, or who took part in the air and sea operations, whom we should write to? John J. Donnelly, employed at the Frankford Arsenal
