another man. No sooner had I got into this hole when a glider landed directly on top
of the mortar platoon leader ’s hole into which he had ducked. The glider slid on
and smashed into trees immediately in front of me throwing the contents everywhere.
I went over to see what help I could be and noticed one chap laying on his back on
the ground trying to pull out his pistol. We assured him as I ran over to him and
asked him how many men were in the plane and he told me nine. He did not seem too
badly hurt and hearing other men calling for medic I started looking for others who
were in various stages of approaching death.

"Immediately the enemy began dropping shells of the gliders so every-
body had to take cover. As far as I knew, everybody was found and no one was killed
but there was not enough medics. One man with a leg badly torn off kept calling for
Captain Brock despite the fact he was given two shots of morphine. From then on the
enemy began the approach toward the town of Ste. Mere-Eglise. This battle was hot
and heavy up until that afternoon."
