Mrs. Edmund W. Duckworth 216 East Vine Street Salisbury, Maryland

Dear Mrs. Duckworth:

As you may by now have learned from your mother, a book about D-day, 1944, is being written by Cornelius Ryan for publication in The Reader's Digest and in book form next spring on the fifteenth anniversary of the Normandy invasion. It will not be a strategic history of the whole invasion operation, but a story of the impact of those 24 hours in people's lives. With the help of the Department of Defense we have been able to reach many hundreds of men who went into Normandy on that day. Because we have been in touch with several of the men who were with your husband on D-Day, we requested your address from the United States Army, and so Mr. Ryan was able to secure your present whereabouts from your mother while he was working on the book in Great Britain.

Mr. Ryan has just returned from intensive work on the book in Europe and will be doing his most intensive work in this country during the remainder of this month. I think that he will be in touch with you soon, with a personal plea for your assistance.

In the meantime, I have thought that you might like to have some forewarning of our interest. I hope very much that we may have your cooperation and good will.

Sincerely yours,

Frances Ward Research Department
