Dutch versions.
The meditational character of this unjustly ignored
intimate book corresponds to the personal tone of much of
the literature of the Devotio Moderna. As James Marrow noted,
the increased use of the vernacular in this period encouraged the
pious to write their own accounts of Christ's life as a means
of expressing their devotion. THis Dutch book, which
appeared in at least 11 ed. in less than 50 yrs, seems to have
been one of the most successful of these personal interpretations
Schreiber Woodcuts C. Snellaert incurred no great expense for his new works.
In his Ludolphus published in 1488 there are bad copies
from the ed. printed by Leeu in Antwerp
