Mattioli's fame speread rapidly, + in 1555 he was summoned to
Prague by the Emperor Ferdinand I to treat his son, the Archduke
Maximilian. Here he remained for more than 23 yrs, + here too,
was first published the vast folio ed. of his Commentarii, with large
woodcut illustrations + Czech text (Girkii Malantryka, 1562.)
Seven further ed. followed between 1562 + 1604 with texts in
Ref: Grasse IV p. 446 German, Latin + Italian, + in all the Commentarii was issued,
in various formats + 5 different languages at least 45 times.
The artists who made bothe the small + the large woodcuts
for the Commentarii were an Italian, Giorgio Lierale of
Udine, + a German named Woldgang Meyerpeck. The big
set of figures is in every way immeasurably superior to the
small.

Bugloss, Vipers Echium Vulgare - The common name has a complex
derivation - from the Latin Buglossa, + the Greek
bouglossos, meaning "ox-tongue." Echium an old Greek
name meaning viper was applied to the plant at a later date
