Legenda sanctorum - Readings about the Saints.
The 3 most widely read books in Western Europe of the 12 and 13th C
were 1) Romance of the Rose
2) Golden Legend.
3) Reynard the Fox.
The Golden Legend was probably the most popular non-litergical work
of the late middle ages, with some 500 copies extant. The 182 chapters
of Voragine's original text were intended for regular devotional
readings in Chapter Houses and refectories of monastic institutions.
The original Latin text was seldom illustrated, though
illuminated copies of the French version by Jean de Vignay
are not uncommon.
