Secret Service

To
Samuel Manesty Esq.
Resident &c &c &c
at Bussora

Sir.

I have the honor to inform you that the Ternate imported here yesterday
[Ending] Command of Lt. Lowes on Secret Service

It is with much regret I am under the disagreeable
necessity of informing you of the melancholy event which occasioned the Death
of the late Persian Embassador Hadgee Kaliel Khaun who was unfortunately
killed on the Evening of the 20th. July in endeavouring to quell a dispute between
his people & the Honorary Guard it is needless for me to enlarge on the Subject
as of course the whole of the particulars are mentioned in the Public Packets
which are now on board the Ternate _

As I have conceived it requisite to detain the Ternate
here / agreeable to my Instructions / for the benefit of the Honble Company Service
as well as to secure the Compys. property as the safety of My own Person &
Assistant particularly under such a fickle government / I have to request
that you will send down one of the Cruizers for the receipt of the Bussora
& Bagdad Packets, or two hire one of the Beniattaba or Bundaruk Boats
to come here for the same _____ I have endeavoured every thing in My
Power to hire a Boat here but it is a thing utterly impossible as they are
afraid of being taken by the Beniattaba & [Suadie] Arabs _____

I should have sent the packets
over Land but as I have heard the single letter I sent you respecting
Colonel Harcourt was opend; I thought it most prudent not to do so _
as it is of the most Serious consequence to Our Government that this
unfortunate circumstance should not be know amongst the Natives/or
any body but yourself / untill my dispatches are forwarded to the
Persian Monarch with whom I am in hopes every thing will be
adjusted to the satisfaction of himself & our supreem government _

When this deplorable accident happened Mr Duncan
was not in Bombay & unhappily Mr [Carnac] had departed this life
the ruins of government was in the hands of John Hector Cherry Esq.

I have the honor to be
Sir
Your most obedient humble servant
Mirza Mehedy Ally Khaun
