VOL 11 LETTERS INWARD AND OUTWARD

ReadAboutContentsHelp
The volume contains letters received by the Resident at Bushire. For most of the period covered by this volume the Acting Resident at Bushire was Lieutenant William Bruce. The two other occupants of the Residency during this period were Andrew Jukes, Surgeon, and Stephen Babington. Correspondents include the British Mission at Tabriz and Tehran, in Persia, and the Government of Bombay, although there are a small number of letters from the Government of Fort William, Calcutta. Diplomatic exchanges between Britain and Persia are the main feature of the correspondence. Other subjects include: the Bushire Residency's accounts and expenses; the woollen and horses trade; instructions for receiving visitors at Bushire and the sending of letters and packets from Bombay to the Court of Persia, via Bushire. Some of the letters contain enclosures such as copies of letters from other Government departments at Bombay. The volume also contains a number of letters outward, sent by William Bruce between 19 and 25 December 1810, mostly regarding the Bushire Residency's accounts and expenses.

[1] Bushire 15th. December 1808. [2] To ; [3] Lieutenant William Bruce [4] acting Resident at [5] Bushire [6] Sir, [7] I have the honor to acknowledge [8] receipt of your Letter of the 25th- Novermber per Fury [9] I have requested Sir Harford [10] Jones to order all such articles as her may be pleased to re = [11] =ject from those forwarded to him per Benares to be deli= [12] =vered over to you on the public account , and I beg that [13] you will on receipt of the Said articles forward me a par= [14] = ticular account of them for my information and await my [15] farther instructions concerning the manner in which they [16] shall hereafter be disposed of with the least possible loss [17] to the Honble Company. [18] I have received by the Fury 9.970 [19] Eyn Piasters, the remaining 30 to complete the sum of 10,000 [20] appear to have been lost in consequence of the bursting of [21] some of the Bags. [22] I beg you will take an early op= [23] =portunity of sending us a farther supply as we are great [24] =ly in want of Cash of present, and I wish if possible [25] to avoid drawing any more Bills on the Governments [26] in India, as the Exchange at Bussora appears to be [27] unfavorable. [1] Having lately entered upon a gen [2] review of all Jaafer Ali khan's accounts, I have no [3] request that you will on communications with the Khan a [4] =ford us some further informations, which appears necessary [5] before we can properly understand their actual state at the [6] present moment, and previously to the final terminations [7] of all changes in our Books on account of expences in= [8] =curred by him, which of course takes place from the date [9] of Sir Harford Jones's arrival at Bushire. [10] For this purpose I have the honor [11] to enclose you a statement of all payments made to [12] Jaafer Ali Khan till the period of my departure from [13] Bushire. They amount to the sum of Riage Piasters [14] 13546.3.14 concerning which we are in possessions of all [15] necessary information, with the exceptions of three Bills no= [16] = ted at the bottom, and amounting to the Sum of Raige Piaa [17] = ters 1587.2.11 of the particulars of which expenditure we [18] cannot find any detailed accounts. I request you will [19] address Jaafer Ali Khan on this subject and receive from him [20] the requisite explanations. [21] By your account of Disburse= [22] =ments on account of this missions dates 30th. September, it [23] appears that you have paid Jaafer Ali Khan's Bills on [24] you to the amount of 8382.3 Raige Piasters. But this in [25] no way tallies with the two accounts forwarded to me in [26] your former official Dispatch from Jaafer Ali khan [27] himself. As you may not have retained copies of these [28] accounts, I beg leave to enclose them. [29] N° 2 amounts to Ein Ps. 3055 [30] N° 3 D° D°- 3550 [31] Ein 6605 [32] To which must be added the Amount [33] of Jaafers Bill on you for 600 Meyjars [34] which he in an irregular manner [35] affords you credit for in the body [36] of his last account N°3- 3720 [37] Total Ein Ps. 10325 [38] As this last account N°-3 is very loose [39] =ly draws up. and the particulars of the greater part of the [40] large Disbursements therein noticed are not given at all, [41] I am inclined to think that a great part of the Dis= [42] bursements forming N° 2 are again included in it ; but [43] I cannot be certain how the matter stands without fur= [44] =ther detailed information. [1] It is useless therefore to waste time [2] in endeavouring to discover the real meaning of these ac = [3] =counts without a reference to Jaafer Ali himself and I [4] request that you will apply to him for the requisite infor [5] = mation and especially for the particulars of the disburse= [6] = ment of 2580 and 3720 Ein Piasters amounting to 6300 [7] which he notices in N°-3 as being expended " to save him [8] from Danger " & a such information as I possess on this [9] subject is to be found only in the vague mention which [10] he makes of different presents in the course of his cor= [11] =respondence. But as in some instances, he has repeated [12] the same thing twice or thrice over and in others has not [13] clearly expressed himself I find it impossible to collect [14] from these documents such lights as appear conclusive [15] and satisfactory [16] Jaafer ali khan has by our ac= [17] =counts received the Salaries for himself and the agent [18] at Teheraun up to the 1st. of August ; and a farther [19] change has been made in Jaafer Ali's Accounts for the Salary [20] of the latter Agent for August and September I beg you will there [21] =fore after receiving the necessary explanations from Jaafer Ali [22] concerning the Accounts pay up the Salary of both to the end [23] of October ; from which period all disbursements of that na= [24] =ture will ofcourse be defrayed by His Majesty's Envoy. [25] To conclude I must request [26] that you will be good enough to procure for us the requi= [27] =site explanations and to make the proposed settlement [28] with Jaafer Ali Khan as soon as you conveniently can ; be= [29] =cause in the present state of these accounts we cannot in [30] any way bring them to a conclusive settlement and the [31] whole of these disbursements must remain for the present [32] charged under the head of Advances to Jaafer Ali Khan. [33] I have the honor to be, [34] Sir, [35] Your most Obedient, [36] humble Servant; [37] Charles Pasley [38] actg. for B.G. Malcolm [39] Camp at [40] Mohumrah [41] 22nd. Decembr. 1814.
