scientists and scholars have joined
together in an effort to alleviate the
evils engendered by these attacks —
it would be out of place for me to do so.

Instead, I shall give some examples of
the harm done by the attacks on academic
freedom under the loyalty-security guise.

First, there is the loyalty oath of the
University of California. One of my former
students held a position on the professorial
staff. As the controversy between the Regents
and the Faculty continued, he decided that
he would not sign the Oath. He had not
been at all active in politics, and he had
no embarrassing connections; but he
had red hair, was of Irish descent,
was stubborn, and had convictions about
his rights. He did not sign. He lost
his post, where he had been an effective
teacher and research man. The only job
that he could get was as a laborer on a
farm. After a year he was cleared
