There are two possible futures for us.

1. A world war, war with Russia, that
devastates the world — 35,000 US atomic bombs,
10,000 Russian, could if detonated make the
whole world a waste.

2. A world at peace, that never sees another
great war.

I believe that there will never again be a world
war.

I think that many others share this
belief. Ten days ago President Eisenhower
said that he would not attend a demonstration
of atomic weapons, as President of the
United States, even though perhaps he
should, as Commander-in-Chief; that he
would not go because his chief interest
in nuclear science is peace.

This is not the statement of a
Commander-in-Chief who expects to
go to war.
