that there be a class of "world citizens" —
scientists, educators, clergymen, artists,
business men, to be given "world
passports", to "promote a spirit
of international cooperation."

How great it would be, to be a
"world citizen", to owe one's allegiance
to the human race! I am a native
Oregonian, a resident of California
for 34 years; I do not feel special
allegiance to either Oregon or California.
(Perhaps if I were a Mississippian, like
Faulkner, my feelings would be different.)
I am an American, but I feel at home
in other countries, especially England.
I cannot justify nationalism —
but I could, with great enthusiasm,
work for the World, for Humanity.
To work for the World as a whole,
