In consequence of my
absence from Charleston, at my summer retreat,
near Flat Rock, Henderson County, No. Ca. I did
not receive until today, your note of the 5th ultimo,
inviting me to attend on the 10th Instant, at Uni-
-versity Place and to be present at the laying of the
Corner Stone of the University of the South, with appro-
-priate ceremonies.

Very sincerely do I thank you, my Dear
Sir, for the honor of this invitation, and regret exceed-
-ingly that it will not be in my power to be present on
that solemn and august occasion. My health at this time,
does not permit me to take so long a journey. My best
wishes - my fervent aspirations will be with you. May
the blessing of Heaven attend prosper and fructify your
great undertaking - make it an Ornament and Honor
to our Country - and a Source of sound learning, knowledge
wisdom, divine Light and Life to the latest posterity
