burning -- & still the unbroken chimney stuck in its place --
I dashed around, and threw the still burning lamp to the fire
place -- it fell on the rug, and the little kerosene still in
it caught fire, and blazed up as high as the mantel piece-;
but thank God my wife escaped, it seemed to me miraculously --
with skirts all saturated with kerosene, and the burning
lamp had been right at her feet -- I was so overcome that
I was in a tremor all over for quite a long time -- and I was
never easy until I banished glass lamps from my house-; &
substituted metallic, non explosive ones -- I have not had
glass lamps (except a hanging one) in my house for a long time --

During this summer a murder was committed near Quincy --
that was shocking-; on the 21st of July a man named Cullen
Edwards rode out of town with another named Wm Johns-; both
of them very drunk-; and both quarrelling; the quarrel got worse
on the road-; and when they were 2 miles from town, close to the
home of our sheriff -- Mr. Jordan-, they got off of their
horses and went to fighting -- I and Dr Gee were both sent for --
We drove out in the same buggy-; just beyond Mr Jordan's, lying
in a fence corner, lay Edwards just gasping his last-; his
throat cut completely across; the cheek cut wide open too, exposing
his teeth through the fearful gash-; he was deluged with
blood -- The sheriff -- Mr Jordan, had hastily mounted a horse,
and gone in pursuit of Johns-; and whilst we were still examining
the ghastly wounds on Edwards, he rode up with the murderer,
who was so drunk that he could hardly keep his seat on his horse -
He was put in jail & tried in the fall term of court and acquitted-;
there were some extenuating circumstances -- After his
