Devil's Food Cake.

2 cups sifted Swan's Down Cake flour
1 teaspoon soda 2 eggs unbeaten
3/4 " salt 3 squares
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/3 " brown sugar
3 squares (melted) Baker's unsweetened Chocolate milk.
1 teaspoon vanilla.

sift flour once, measure, add soda
and salt, sift 3 times. Cream
shortening, add sugar gradually, creaming
well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating
throughly after each, add chocolate and
blend. Add flour, alternatively with
mile, in small amounts beating
after each. Add vanilla. Turn into 2 deep
9 inch layer pans which as lined on
bottoms and greased. Bake in moderate
oven (300 F) 25 minutes, or bake in 13x19x2
inch pan 40 minutes, with butter, margarine
or lard, use 1 cup milk. With vegetable or
any other shortening use 1 cup plues 2 (over)
