however is anxious to leave and I
do not feel at liberty to retain him -
The sunshine enables his dogs to make
an easier transit over the ice surface
than the shade Therms: indicate - my
experiments at 12 m. show a Sun
bathed snow surface of -31°while the
atmosphere in shade gives -50° This
unusual result must be due to conducted
heat from the water below the
ice. Hans took with him an outfit
of my own selection and equipment.
If his dogs hold up without the
usual convulsions - I [should] have no fear for
him on his success. But I love the fellow as if he was my son.

Commenced overhauling documents
collection & - in case of non liberation of
brig forcing me to attempt our escape
by boats - The plan of these operations
is fully organised as the only season
for preparation is close at hand - but now
- I have not a single efficient operative
unstricken by scurvy.

This has been a brilliant day and
except in temperature very favourable for travel
I have little doubt of Hans having made
a safe passage to the settlement. [How he
is treated remains to be seen.]
I think how many days I can give him, with a [??] wings. Peterson remains too knocked up to hunt

Our sick have become suddenly
worse - symptoms of prostration which I can
only attribute to the want of fresh food
show themselves upon nearly all - Brooks
and McGeary hold best but Wilson
