Mr Warren

Dear freind I received yours of the 20th this moment I guess I did leave out the five dollars you gave me in Boston I dont think I shall got to Norwich at present if you think I had better not and only stay this year here at Andover.

You wished me to write my ideas about going south and teach Negros. I have not patience enough to be a teacher even if I knew enough and if I had both of these requisite qualities, I have not enough philanthropy to do so. I think it is a great work and I honor them that are engaged

in it but I never can myself. I shall try (with your consent) again to enlist and if they will not take me in the army I will go to Sea there is nothing esle I am fit for I shall never make anything in this world. to tell you the truth Mr Warren I am discouraged I try to learn but I cannot retain it, every thing I put my hand to I seem to turn upside down.

I do wrong perhaps in writing to you in this tone but I cannot help it it is ungratefull and I will write no more. I am geting along pretty well in my studies considering all things I am nearly through my Arithmetic.

The religious interest remains unabated. I received a letter from Mr. Hayward the other day he said he should like to have me come and help him hay next summer vacation if I had no other plans laid out, I wrote and told him perhaps I would come I had other plans but as my funds are so low I will forgo them I think.

The Board bill is nearly due it will be about $18. or $19. and I have got to get some more wood I had to get oak and most of it small/at that [scribbles] walnut was not to be had at any price and oak is $8.00 a cord. I shall want about $25.00 and then I shall not need any more untill the end of the term.

Andover. Oct. 27. 1862 Mr Warren Dear friend I received your letter with $15.00 enclosed on the 15th.

I am glad too hear that you are well.

What changeble weather we are having. One day cold enough for an overcoat and the next almost warm enough for Summer clothing.

School has only four more weeks to keep, there has about 18 of the boys that were here when are now in the army, two that were here last term as well and strong as any of us are dead. One of them graduated last term and was one of the leading

christians in school and also took an high honor in his class. He went out as first lieutenant in a Connecticut Regiment and was in the Antietam. The Captain being killed he had command of the company. They said he behave with great courage throughtout the Battle. About a week ago he had the diptheria and lived but a short time. His name was S H Thompson. The other was in my class in Arithmetic and a very nice young man. I met him in Boston when I was with you on Washington he was on his was to camp then. He belong here and was brought home. He was buried yesterday. Another young man named J.G. Smith that was here last term has been wounded

in the arm but how severely I have not heard. The war still goes on and the bravest and most talented young men are killed. How many there are that now sleep wrapt in glory nevermore too wake untill the last Trumpet shall sound. That would but for this war have written high on the scroll of fame and how many more the country will need before the cruel war is at an end no one knows but I hope not many.

Please give my regards to Mrs Warren. I hope you will excuse my mistakes because it is rather late. Yours Truly Eugene C. Houghton
