Andover - May, 18th 1843.

My dear brother:

The sun has just withdrawn its pierceing rays and now the clouds seem to cheer us with their faint rays, and you know Andover is noted for its beautiful sunsets.

As I now sit down to my center-table to write to you I think it is almost folly as it respects news, for I have none of importance. But it is very pleasant to have the pleasure of writing to a dear brother, for it is next to seeing you. I am enjoying myself much, and intend by the healp of God to improve evry moment to the best advantage. I rise about 4 1/2 in the morn Study two hours evry morn one at noon and one at night. And during the the remainder of the time I employ myself in reading drawing &c. I get along in my studies quite well. Mrs. Barrett is very kind to me also all of the girls. I am the youngest in the family of 9. Augusta Battles came to meeting last Sab, she walked. Is somewhat improved in health she came home and spent the noon with me. She liked the looks much as it resects the house, and I think she had half a mind to come here to school. But she told me she thought she should go to Derry, in a few weeks. They moved last Tuesday. The children went in the morn and Mr. and Mrs. B's intended to have gone out in the 4 oclock train but they broke down and had some trouble. But they got there soon enough but oweing to their stupidity missed of the cars, and they went out in the 6 ocloc train. But my eyes are getting very tired and I must stop. Good Night

Dear Henry, I suppose you would like to know how I am getting along as reguards my expedition to China. As was supposed, they reguard the undertaking as rather hazerdous and bordering on the flightsy, They say I can do well enough to remain at home, meaning by that to go into a blasted cotton mill, I suppose, Charles says he has no doubt but that I could make - money but he does not consider that the grand end, not aspire to be different, and do better than common men, settle down and be contented with my lot. I tell him that the principle carried out would put an end to all great enterprises and undertakings, to which he implies that I am not a master mind, and therefore unfit to undertake great things. I am not going to give up the ship as yet, I want to go & will go if I can, you must not be surprised if you see me down soon, armed, equiped.

I wish you would write to me soon. you may have heard something in reguard to it since I left and I should like to hear from you at any rate. I cannot make
